Typographicx - Wave Technique

Wave Technique Overview

The Wave Technique is a more advanced way of creating a bold and appealing typography animation where text appears to be washed away by an ocean wave.

  • This effect requires more steps than any of the courses before it.
  • It is best to choose a blocky, bold font because it is easier to see on the water. However, experiment a little and you might find something else that works for you.
  • The type of ocean footage you use for the animation plays a big factor in getting this animation to look right. Choose your footage wisely, and remember it needs to be a stationary camera shot overlooking a flat surfaced ocean.

Wave Technique Final Thoughts

In closing, there are a few things to remember from the course.

  • I created this animation with the dimensions of 1920 pixels by 1080 pixels. This was my preferred resolution. Feel free to change the dimensions of the animation to suit your liking.
  • Try out different font families, colors, point sizes, character spacing and alignments. A lighter, bold and blocky font works the best.
  • When adjusting the transform properties, pay close attention to the way the text looks as it “sits” on the water. Make adjustments as necessary to the Scale, Skew, Skew Axis and the Rotation.
  • When adjusting the ripple effects, pay close attention to the way the text looks as it “moves” with the water. Make adjustments as necessary to the Radius, the Center of the Ripple, Wave Speed, the Wave Width and the Wave Height.
  • Make adjustments to the opacity of the text layers and the Classic Color Dodge as needed by watching how it looks on the water.
